چکیده

Penicillins are among the most frequently prescribed drugs, and the 15 different members are marketed in many forms and combinations. I will try to place the use of both the older ones and also the more recent additions. In both clinical usage and antibacterial activity there are four main divisions of the penicillin family-benzylpenicillin (and other closely related antibiotics), the penicillinase-stable penicillins, the broad-spectrum penicillins, and the antipseudomonal penicillins. All are bactericidal agents. They act by interfering with the final stages of peptidoglycan synthesis, the substance that is found in the bacterial cell wall and is responsible for maintaining its shape.

Antimicrobial Susceptibility Pattern of Staphylococcus aureus Strains Isolated from Hospitalized Patients in Tehran, Iran

Staphylococcus aureus is a major bacterial pathogen that causes different community- and hospital-acquired infections. The evaluation of antibiotic prescribing in general practice using a health insurance company database: penicillins use

General practitioners often prescribe antibiotics for diagnoses that do not require antibiotic treatment, partially because of the fear of treatment failure (and alibism). They are also strongly influenced by patients’ requests, and the empirical use of antibiotics is the main way of infection treatment in general practice in the Czech Republic. All this leads to non-adherence to the clinical r...

Original Contribution Antibiotic Use and Risk of Multiple Sclerosis

Some reports suggest that bacteria, including Chlamydophila pneumoniae, could be involved in the etiology of multiple sclerosis. If that is true, persons who used antibiotics active against these bacteria, compared with nonusers, might be at lower risk of multiple sclerosis. Using a 1993–2000 case-control study nested in the United Kingdom–based General Practice Research Database cohort, the au...

Challenges of Empirical Antibiotic Therapy for Community-Acquired Pneumonia in Children

BACKGROUND Community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality globally, responsible for more than 14% of deaths in children younger than 5 years of age. Due to difficulties with pathogen identification and diagnostics of CAP in children, targeted antimicrobial therapy is not possible, hence the widespread use of empirical antibiotics, in particular penicillins, cep...
